Dear Subscriber,

The last weekend was an exciting one as I saw Liverpool powered by Kenny Daglish as the new Manager over power Manchester United 3-1. Many Manchester United fans may not like it but given the pain Liverpool fans have experienced this long, it was and is a wonderful moment. In the last e news we watched with shock and awe the troubles in the Middle East. The sojourn continues with the courage undiminished and the fact that human voices cannot be silenced by guns once the human spirit decides to discard fear and face the challenge.

Introduction
Sometimes in life we miss out on important things. On Monday, this week I had the President of Malaysian Institute of Human Resources Management Ramley call me to say that the pioneer of human resources management in Malaysia Mr. Sam Abishegam had passed away. I had met him a few months ago with my family. He was as usual cheerful and full of energy despite his failing health. He looked nowhere close to what he used to but that did not deter Sam from articulating his ideas in his powerful booming voice. I had wanted to visit him for the last few weeks as I was nervous about his health. Alas, it did not happen. When the news came I just felt sorry that I had not visited him one more time. Sam was one person I can never ever forget in my life. He chose to guide and shared with me his knowledge. He ensured I was on a study visit to Germany and that one trip paved my growth. It was my feeling that he was not recognised for his contributions as much as he should have been. As an individual he went beyond the self interest to care for the nation, region and the world of Human Resources. We salute you, Sam.

  • Competency & Performance

Raymond Caldwell, University of London says that recontextualise the effectiveness of competency models. His article published in the Human Resource Management journal claims that competency models are weak in predicting performance. There is a need to re jig the Competency – Performance equation to ensure we can demonstrate ROI – return on investments or as Jim Kirkpatrick is fond of saying ROE – return on expectations. Email subra@smrhrgroup.com or muru@smrhrgroup.com for information on The ROI of Competency models.

  • Creating Your Own Rainbow

My colleague Kapila sends out daily inspirational messages. A post she sent out made sense. Titled No Pain No Progress, it made interesting reading.  As Lao-Tzu said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." So what if that first step is a little painful? You see, if you want to accomplish something, there are two kinds of pain you might encounter: the pain of discipline and the pain of regret. And, of course the question was it the right first step that you wanted remains. Creating Your Own Rainbow is finding the purpose of your life and then persistently working towards it. Book review
David Schwartz’s The Magic of Thinking BIG is a very readable, practical and interesting book. It describes ideas in a very simple and easy to follow manner. The fact that you do not have to be an intellectual or have innate talent to attain great success is an important realization for many. Nevertheless, the need to learn the habit of thinking and behaving in ways that get you great success are important. To do so, we need to be able to take feedback.  Marjorie’s session I love feedback at Asia HRDCongress. The book is available at www.amazon.com and to attend her session visit www.hrdcongress.com
